BMW 4D printing concept car adds multiple modes of driving

In today's world, the centenarians are becoming more and more, but there are still a handful of companies in their 100s. Today, the famous car company BMW has become another new member of the 100-year-old club. On March 7, 2016, in order to celebrate its 100th anniversary, BMW presented a concept car in Munich called the next century car. Known as the Vision Next 100, this car looks like it's very similar to the company's current offerings, but behind them there is a complete change.

At least on the surface, it is still a very traditional thing, such as four wheels and four doors, and four sci-fi seats in the car. In other words, it is still a standard car. But in fact, this is a car with a split character. It has two driving modes that will completely change your driving experience and reflect BMW's view of the future direction of the car.

The first driving mode is called "Boost," which is actually similar to our driving model today. In this mode, the car is still driven by human passengers, but it will make you feel more comfortable. And when you switch the driving mode to "Ease", things get interesting. In this mode, the steering wheel will be retracted and the dashboard will be reconfigured. The front seats will also move and will tilt slightly toward each other so that passengers can talk to each other.

In addition, almost every aspect of the car changes, such as the lights outside the car, which switches colors to reflect changes in the car's current driving style.

According to Xiaobian, the entire windshield of the Vision Next 100 is a responsive display. In Boost mode, it will project the appropriate driving route to pass the traffic, alerting you to possible dangers from other cars, and of course it will provide navigation information. After entering Ease mode, it will play a more guided role. The local attractions will be visually highlighted, or various suggestions based on the review site will pop up according to your preferences.

In addition, there is another thing called Vision Next 100 called The Companion, which is a large gem-like object on the dashboard and can be projected through the windshield. This is actually a visual artificial intelligence (AI) application in the car that learns the driver's habits and needs. The details are a bit vague on BMW, which is estimated to be the company's secret weapon. The Companion performs differently in different driving modes, hidden in Boost mode, but pops up in Ease mode, which interacts with drivers, passengers, and even pedestrians.

The car's manufacturing technology will also have a thorough improvement, BMW called it "4D printing." The basic meaning is that the parts of the car are not only manufactured with the current additive manufacturing process and 3D printers, but they are fully functional after printing. In other words, the car may "grow" out of a pile of raw materials. In addition, it uses a flexible board to cover the wheels, providing excellent aerodynamics.

Finally, BMW did not mention the power system of the Vision Next 100. It only said that the car is “zero-emission” and is estimated to be electric. It remains to be seen whether the power is derived from hydrogen fuel cells.
